When I discovered Warren Manning’s proposal for a public golf course at The Parade in 1903, I became curious about the first golf played in Minneapolis. The course didn’t last long, a little more than 10 years, but it did spawn two of the more famous golf courses in Minnesota: Minikahda and Interlachen. The first Minneapolis golf course and club were in Bryn Mawr. A year before Minikahda opened, many of its members, Minneapolis’s highest society, played at a course much closer to the central city. The first golf course in Minneapolis was not Minikahda. I fail to see how the city couldn’t update the park and keep the pool intact. But some things are priceless and this pool was a gem. I know it was old and I know how expensive it is to repair, and I know the city didn’t make money on it. Each summer we were thankful it was opening again. I moved after eight summers, to raise my son in a safer area, but we came back every summer on an almost daily basis to swim. I can dive under, lay on the bottom, look up at the sky and see prisms. Weekend mornings were perfect peaceful times to relax, enjoy the sun and water. It could get pretty wild and crazy on hot afternoons. Webber had three diving boards, a shape that allowed for lots of wide open fun. Water parks are fun, but they don’t allow for swimming. But the big pool was always safe.Īfter the city made Rosacker and North Commons into water parks, Webber Pool was the only ‘real’ pool left in the city. I was once in the middle of a shooting with my son in a stroller, returning home from the baby pool near the community center. Most of the time, the park was not safe to be in, especially in the evening. I could sit there at the edge of the pool just thinking about whatever, usually not the swim I was about to do. This was my view as I started my laps each morning. Toddlers and babies must wear swim diapers, which will be available for purchase for $2.įor more information about Webber Natural Swimming Pool please visit /webberpool. Clothing not allowed in the pool includes: The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board would like to remind the public the following items will not be allowed on pool grounds: This unique water management system is more sensitive than a traditional, chemically treated pool and will require cooperation from the public to stay open. All of the pool’s 500,000 gallons of water circulates through this process every 12 hours. In the regeneration basin, layers of gravel and approximately 7,000 aquatic plants help cleanse the water before it’s pumped back into the pool. Instead, water is pumped from the pool through a system of biological filters and into an adjacent regeneration basin. The Webber pool is the first public pool in North America that does not use chemicals to keep its water clean. $50 resident and $60 non-resident (scholarships available).
